Every year there is a new flu vaccination, but what is the big deal? You may be thinking ‘I got the flu shot last year, do I really need it again?’ or ‘Only the elderly need the flu shot, I am young and healthy’ or even ‘Last time I got the flu shot it gave me the flu’. Flu viruses are constantly changing and there are many different strains of virus. Each year the flu vaccination is updated to cover the common circulating strains; which is why you need a flu shot each year.
In pharmacies, anyone over 18 years is able to be vaccinated. While it is particularly important for people over 65 years, pregnant women and those with specific medical conditions to get the flu vaccine. Anyone, regardless of age, fitness or existing health conditions can get the flu, therefore should consider being vaccinated. It is important to note that you cannot get the flu from the vaccine. In Australia, the flu vaccination does not contain any ‘live’ viruses, therefore cannot cause the flu. Flu season in Australia is usually between June and September, the best time to get the flu vaccination is from March to May. The 2018 influenza vaccination is now available here at Friendlies Chemist. So, what are you waiting for? Book an appointment today. Comments are closed.
